AIRRT: AVIAN INFLUENZA RAPID RESPONSE TRAINING
sponsored by: the Joplin City Health Department, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and the Missouri Department of Agriculture This training workshop, held on Thursday, October 4, 2007, on the Missouri Southern State University campus, was hosted by the Joplin City Health Department. There were approximately forty representatives in attendance from area hospital infection control practitioners, emergency planners, biologists, wildlife area managers, public health agencies, law enforcement and animal-care agencies. This invitation-only event focused on the roles and responsibilities each agency has in response to an avian influenza outbreak. Project coordinators include: Dr. Howard Pue, State Public Health Veterinarian, Department of Health and Human Services Ms. Rose Foster, Poultry Health Program Coordinator, Missouri Department of Agriculture. The training workshop is an attempt to bring together a diverse mixture of animal and human health experts to discuss various scenarios related to an outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1) in animals and/or humans. This will allow local public/private entities to develop personal working relationships that are invaluable in planning and response to a pandemic situation. The City of Joplin Health Department was the first of six public health agencies in Missouri that agreed to host this event for the area. |
