*There are 73.6 million children in the United States, but only 100,000 courses of antivirals for children in the Strategic National Stockpile

*46 percent of bird flu deaths since 2003 were children & teens between the ages of 0-19 years old

*There are no coherent plans for tens of millions of schoolchildren if schools & day-care centers are closed

*There are no plans for the 30 million children who rely on the  National School Lunch Program for meals each day to provide these services if schools are closed

Family Emergency Planning

Planning & Preparing:

Make sure your family has a plan in case of an emergency. Before an emergency happens, sit down together and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of the plan in your emergency supply kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster. Fill out a card and give one to each member of your family to make sure they know who to call and where to meet in case of an emergency.

Many people have a deep bond with their pets. If your animals are true members of the family, they must be included in your family's emergency planning and preparations.  American Veterinary Medical Association
