A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, begins to cause serious illness, and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide.

It's been almost 40 years since the last flu pandemic swept through the world, killing 34,000 people in the United States and 700,000 worldwide.  Disease trackers fear that we are due for another epidemic outbreak. Public health authorities are particularly concerned about the H5N1 avian "bird flu" virus.

There are steps that everyone can take to prepare now.
